I’d recommend using the PLA to get your toes wet and prototype, then use one of the more robust filaments. Some prints can absolutely uae PLA, but i like to play it safe.

As for if something is still relevant… Anything functional and well reviewed should be fine. Pick something within your budget, that you can make with the tools on hand (or doesn’t require going out of budget).
