    A Brazilian oceanographer has been elected the next secretary-general of the International Seabed Authority, a leadership change that could slow the rush to strip-mine deep sea ecosystems for electric vehicle battery metals.

    That was such a relief when I opened the article. This was going to be so fucking dangerous. It literally could cause at least regional collapse of an entire oceanic ecosystem.

      It was absolutely wild seeing those articles recently with headlines along the lines of “here’s why it’s maybe not a great idea to kill everything in the deep ocean” like holy fuck we know less about that part of the ocean than we do about outer space and we have to argue about not completely ruining it? What the fuck?
