I wanted a long gun locker. Why is it that I can only find 2 categories in the market:

  • flimsy cabinets that you could open without tools;
  • mega safes that will stand as a testament to humanity in 1000 years.

Where’s my middle option?

    Do you want to deter the curious or a quick snatch and grab or stop a targeted burglary? The reality is that even a relatively study ‘safe’ can be opened in a couple of minutes by a determined attacker with a crowbar. In order to resist this you need thick steel which weighs hundreds of pounds, and just adding a bit more steel without accomplishing this is basically pointless. I have a flimsy cabinet that locks in my closet, but it doesn’t look like it obviously has guns inside.

      The first two. Not expecting it to hold against targeted burglary. My issue is the cheap ones I saw looked like I could smash the door with kicks. I’m okay if the cabinet can be opened with B&E tools. I expect some minimum resilience, like not having exposed hinges, and enough steel that it at least requires a decent crowbar to pry open. No fire proofing or water proofing required, the guns are not expensive (at least not enough to warrant a safe that’s about as expensive than they are combined). Just don’t want them easily accessible.
