Honestly, I’ve been taking a chance on eBay. If the price is close to $10/TB and the drive is an enterprise drive that is listed as known to be working, with a good return policy, I take the risk. I just run tests as soon as I have it so far, all have been good (eight purchases).

In my case, it wasn’t overheating. Drives rarely got above 75-80F. There were two large fans and plenty of ventilation to pull air through the enclosure. From what I’ve read, mostly on unRAID forums, it is USB that is the issue.

Nah, I looked into it and USB is just super unreliable for any sort of array. The drives all worked just fine if I ran them as individual drives.

If you’re going to run the drives as individual drives in the enclosure, you should be fine but if you set them up as a RAID array, USB won’t work well. The connection is too unreliable and will cause issues. I’ve tried with a 10-bay USB-C enclosure using unRAID, Fedora, and Debian. I tried multiple cables. It just kept dropping the connection during large transfers.

It’s like a baby step on the self hosting journey. Not as pure as Jellyfin but still a little better than Netflix. I paid for a Plex lifetime pass years ago, when they were still producing cool updates like DVR functionality for OTA broadcasts. I still run it but now Jellyfin is running alongside it with the intent of dropping Plex soon.

Purchasing is an opt in too. I use both but paid for a Plex lifetime pass almost 10 years ago. It was easier to set up remote access. Setting up a server was new to me at the time so anything I could find that made it easier was worth it. I also bought an unRAID lifetime pass for the same reason (among other reasons).

I’m not sure. I’ve always wanted something like Plex but for games.

What about Sunshine and Moonlight? This is something I’ve been mildly interested in for a while but never took a deep dive.

Thinkcentre Tiny, Dell Optiplex Micro, or HP ProDesk Mini. Prices have gone up the last few months but they’re still a solid value. Most sellers ship pretty quick these days.
