Also, irrelevant to you, but: I might need a new Lemmy account. Connect isn’t working for me and I can’t find which e-mail I used to sign up for Lemmy. Super annoying, because I keep needing to search for the posts that I commented on, and then find the comments themselves in order to reply. My inbox just gives me errors about not finding the posts… but they’re obviously still here

Yeah, that’s gotta suck and I’m 100% not against people talking about who they are if they WANT to. What irritates me is the labels people are forced carry.

Like “wow a woman was finally able to achieve what men can achieve” or “wow this gay man was finally able to acheive what straight men can achieve” and that’s the part that annoys me

Eta: I think it’s meant well, but it implies that there’s something “special” about these people that allows them to climb the ranks previously reserved for a select group of people

So to truly be inclusive, things like “race” and gender and sexuality should be looked at as variations of normal, the same way hair color or height is looked at

2nd edit: Ok, sorry, but just to clarify I’m not harping on straight, white, males here. Swinging the pendulum the exact opposite way doesn’t help, either. I’m seeing this more as a societal thing that I’d liked to see changed

My issue with this is: why does their sexuality even matter? It’s their GD business

Eta: I also hate this with race and gender. “First woman to…” why? Why are we so focused on the color of people’s skin, their religion, what’s between their legs, or who they love?

I want to live in a world where a mixed-heritage lesbian woman is elected and no-one bats an eye, or mentions anything about it unless it comes up organically by the person elected. Otherwise the only legit question should be: is this person the best candidate for the job?

Um. In the U.S. I could still go for a walk outside, or out to the grocery store, or grab some fast-food at the drive-through. In China people were being boarded up in their homes… as in, literally boarded up with hammer and nails.

The city name on my birth certificate is outdated. It’s been changed due to political shifts. I did try to read it but I can’t pronounce it at all. I’d have to look it up

I would just like to point out that the Holocaust was not JUST Jews. Other people were persecuted as well (such as LGBTQ+ peeps)

Yeah, I’ve noticed Lemmy has started to be less tolerant of different ideas/opinions lately. Not a fan of that.

We need open discussions and disagreements, and being as civil as possible helps to facilitate that. Otherwise things devolve, some become afraid to voice their thoughts, and trolls thrive off of the attention.

It’s super important that we try to remember there is another person on the other side (even I fail at this at times, but we need to keep trying!)

Agreed. Their human rights abuses concern those with empathy. The consequences of Covid 19 were felt by almost everyone across the globe (one way or another)

I think the idea here is that babies (and likely women) aren’t part of Hamas so there is 0 justification for killing them. Of course innocent men shouldn’t be killed, either, but they could claim they are Hamas militants whereas babies can’t be soldiers

It’s tragic how often the abused become the abusers.

I’ve has mixed feelings about this conflict for a while now. On one hand I understand the need to preserve a people, culture and way of life especially given that aformentioned people was nearly exterminated in the wost ways. On the other hand… wt actual f. Little children don’t support Hamas. They’re blameless in this, and to murder so many innocents just to get to the enemy is sickening

A common thing to do back in the day was to not only kill the king, but the members of his family. (Especially the sons). It’s brutal, but effective

(And obviously humans should be above that in 2023, but here we are)

Women’s rights have been walked back, causing child rape victims to struggle to find abortions, to say nothing of women being forced to carry fetuses who will die upon birth. Trans rights are being shit on, to the point that gender affirming care is being denied to people even where it’s legal. Taxes for the wealthy are too low. The middle class is rare to be in. Health insurance is insanely expensive and it’s difficult to see a doctor even when you have it- emergency rooms will leave you waiting for 6 hours or more. We simultaneously have too many people, and too few children with a looming crisis of too many elderly. We have microplastics in the air, oceans, food, fetuses, everywhere. Housing is largely unaffordable across the globe. Homelessness is out of control. Massive, destructive wildfires are the new norm. Heatwaves are killing people. Migrants are clamouring to find new countries to live in (which will get worse due to climate change) causing all kinds of social frictions. The youth are anxious, depressed, and suicidal.

But please, tell me how things are good for people over all?
