I wonder how many Germans have been yelling at us to “Do SoMeThInG!!” about our rightoid problem in the US?
81 years ago, the fascists of the world learned just how wrong they were. Seems we will have to teach that lesson to them again.
Awesome. I just happen to be binging Babylon 5.
I’m so happy someone knew the inspiration :) Couldn’t quote it exactly since he mentions “Centauri” but it’s one of the best speeches ever.
Saxony-Anhalt is like the fucking Red Run Arkansas Oblast. However, those idiots who voted for the fucking neo-Nazis should have immediate post WWII photos of Magdeburg shoved in front of their faces with Soviet soldiers policing the area.
My guess is the AFD will try to install similar systems as orban did in Hungary. Once AFD functionaries can get their hands on might and government money they will try to tuck as much as possible into their pockets. They talk about patriotism but only act in their own self-interest. They dont even have real plans or visions on how to improve their voters live and are not able to give real substantial answers to journalists questions. But this doesn’t matter to a lot of voters because they are either too frustrated by their own lives or the corrupt shit other political parties did or just brain rotted from tik tok. The AFD talking about patriotism makes them feel good and so they can neglect the fact that the AFD will make their live even worse and they can also neglect that the AFD will do ten times the corrupt shit the “mainstream” parties did. It’s like a drug making you feel good even while facing doom.
The only flag these people have is the one on the €50 note
TL;DR AfD is fascist. Noted.
That doesn’t bode well…
Nope. And there’s no major anti-Nazi military power left in the world to put us back on track this time :( vomits
Fascism has always been about opposition to labor movements in general and socialism in particular. I would bet that China is currently preparing to be invaded and, like the USSR last time, do most of the job of putting down the fascists before other countries join in.
Not sure what you mean - I don’t see anyone daring to invade China in the present or foreseeable future.
Waves from Canada
Are you saying you could free us? I feel like you need what you have to defend your southern border :/
You think I’m afraid of whatever that is under us?
They can’t win a war against people who don’t look like them or talk like them. You think they can win a war fighting people who are nearly identical?
Let’s hope they never dare to try.
Judging by their performances against Iran, Yemen, and Lebanon, the Nazi’s don’t seem to have any military power either.
It’s all Italians this time.
so we’re hoping for incompetence of fascists to save us? :(
*Pulls up soapbox* A little bit of background might be in order:
- AfD is the strongest party in all of the former GDR states, including SA where yesterdays’ elections were held. They stand for unbridled, neoliberal capitalism, garnished with lots of anti-immigration rhetoric. Their boss worked for Goldman-Sachs and that’s saying it all, really.
- SA - one state out of 16 - has 2.1 million inhabitants, out of Germany’s 83.5 million. They do have an outsized influence on the 2nd chamber of parliament, though. As of now, it looks like they will form a coalition government and rule SA.
- In the whole of Germany, AfD currently polls at 27-28%; runner-up is the conservative CDU which is currently leading the federal government, at 20-21%. AfD polls especially high in places where the previous, notorious right-wing party, NPD, did; and before them, the NSDAP. They poll especially high among blue-collar workers, first-time (young) voters and previous non-voters.
- In the EU parliament, AfD has 15 of ESN’s 27 seats. Judging from the seating in the parliament, and from who wants to form a coalition with the AfD, it becomes clear that they are significantly farther right-wing than the likes of Orbán, Le Pen, Fico, Meloni, Salvini or any of the EU-wide known names, really.
- I recommend this free 2024 study to assess the immense danger democracy in Germany is facing. Trans people, women, feminists, Jews, immigrants, social Darwinism - far-right wing voters poll approximately 1.5-3x as high in “hate” values than right-wing voters.
- The long and short is: Don’t come to Germany, especially not Eastern Germany, and especially not if you don’t have lily-white skin. This is my honest, sober advice for you.
28% is fucking crazy. What the actual fuck Germany, is it time to split it in half again?
it may be a ‘reunified’ state, but the divide between the former east and west germany is very much still apparent in many, if not most, maps that outline pretty much any demographic.
I mean, if they actually used their own laws, they could just ignore that idiotic quarter. When the nation was set up, not going Nazi again was a major consideration. Buuut the precedent for legal action, now, is that every anti-constitutional group is too small to qualify, too big to qualify, or, like, both.
SA
Misread it initially as Sturmabteilung, not Saxony-Anhalt. In any case, it’s now a hostile state.
The correct abbreviation would be ST, not SA, but considering the AfD is now close to an absolute majority the latter fits better.
former GDR states
Who could’ve predicted that people who spent half a century under radical socialism, will be right wing and pro capitalism
They didn’t live under “radical socialism”
I swear to God you people are so fucking stupid. Lookup what words mean. You are destroying EVERYTHING WITH YOUR STUPIDITY
WE HAVE TOLERATED THE STUPID TOO MUCH. STUPID PEOPLE NEED TO BE SHOUTED DOWN AND TREATED APPROPRIATELY.
NAZIS NEED TO NOT EXIST. WE LET THEM GO BEFORE AND LOOK WHAT THEY DID.
PEDOPHILIC, AUTHORITARIAN FACSISTS ARE INFECTING EVERYWHERE AND WE ALL KNOWTHE FEW BEHIND IT. WE ALL KNOW WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN TO THEM. WE ALL KNOW WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN TO PEDOPHILIC TRAITORS.
They didn’t live under “radical socialism”
Ah right. Trump had a “Radical” idea to build a wall to keep people out. GDR built a wall to KEEP PEOPLE IN, so they can’t escape. Totally not radical idea. Of corse it was in the name of “enlightened” socialism.
You’re full of shit
Keep posting disingenuous dog shit online and eating crayons i guess. What a life you live, lol fuckin loser.
Oooh, amazing comeback, person who names themself after Hitler.
I love it when people try to make personal attacks cuz it means they’ve admitted they don’t have any good replies.
… Says the guy that was just talking about people eating crayons.
It’s not really clear how much is backlash, and how much is just a failed totalitarian state leaving them uneducated and unrefined. They still tend to want state intervention in the economy, as well, which is why BSW is a thing - the exact opposite would be the former DDR voting for their Liberal (so libertarian for Americans) party.
It’s like Germans have acquired collective amnesia with regards to what happened during 1939.
A life and a half, or a few generations, is all you need for people to start questioning “was it really that bad???”, and then there’ll be snake oil salesman selling snake oil to those who don’t listen to history. And let’s not pretend most of these right-wingers are actually idealistic, they’re all greed pigs after money and power.
The majority of those people agree that it was bad - they just don’t think it’s the same. And they will never think so, unless they’re literally waving nazi flags and heil.
It’s been branded as such a great evil that nothing can ever compare.
Isn’t it crazy that people know what the word “scapegoat” means but are unable to see it?
Like. How can so many people be so incapable of following basic logic to see that immigrants are not what’s caused their quality of life to decline.
Because there are propagandists screaming lies at them on TV, Radio & Internet, and politicians have deliberately deleted the teaching of Critical Thinking Skills from the ediucational curriculum, which would help them resist it.
The refugees from Afghanistan and syria are more of a thing than immigrants.
Refugees are our fault. Our own countries have destabilized theirs.
Pumped in weapons. Incited political violence for their own gains.
And then get all mad when the civilians want to leave to be somewhere safer.
Maybe if our countries stopped all the b.s of meddling in other countries affairs we wouldn’t have to take in a bunch of people trying to find a better life.
No one leaves their life and home for small reasons. These people fear for their lives.
The problem is that whilst the main issues we face are climate change and billionaires; it is still necessary to recognise that many immigrants have exploited their new host countries and we - in Western Europe at least - have been poor at weeding out the bad even when they’re not hiding.
If you look globally, then The West is well off, a just balance of wealth means that almost all of us will have to be poorer. Humans are typified by greed, it drives us. In order to avoid major conflict we need leaders who have morality as a guide, but we’re either too dumb or too greedy at a tribal level to rally behind these leaders.
I think you are using the word exploited wrong.
Exploitation means using desperation in people to force them into agreeing to do low paying work or other desperate acts.
The U.S, the EU, and Canada are largely responsible for destabilizing many other countries and inciting civil wars and genocides.
When civilian people from those countries, people who have no responsibility for the state of their home countries, attempt to leave to find a better life. You say they are exploiting the countries they move to.
It’s those same countries who made the immigrants home country inhospitable.
The amount of money spent on welfare is pennies compared to money spent on weapons and gifts of money to Israel. And all the tax cuts and tax loop holes they keep giving to billionaires who hoard wealth.
Investing in people helps them get out of poverty and give back.
Some times those investments take a generation to show the benefits. But it’s there.
That said, it’s important that welfare money is spent in ways to help people. Job training. Housing. Food. Education. And it’s balanced so that it’s not a better living to stay on it.
Like in the U.S. If you are on disability welfare. Let’s say you get $1000 a month. This is not a living wage. So you get a part time job. You can’t work full time because of your disability but maybe you could do 20 hrs a week. But if you do, you lose your disability welfare.
You won’t make more working 20 hrs a week than the welfare check. And you would also lose health insurance.
So this discourages people from working who could work part time.
This is a flaw with the system. Not the people who are forced to play by the rules and choose the best option.
Likewise. You can’t hold it against people fleeing from an inhospitable country , that your country had a hand in making inhospitable, to go somewhere they have the best chance of making it in.
There is some evidence to suggest cooperation permeated early human society with competition following from the shift to patriarchy.
Strong evidence.
Humans are safest, healthiest, and happiest when we live in harmony and help each other.
We are highly social. We thrive when we work with each other.
East Germany is a complex subject. A lot of money has gone into projects to help it catch up after the reunification since Russia completely gutted it, but not much of that money made it anywhere. The population feels left behind and unheard. They’re being treated as lesser through little fault of their own. Pretty easy breeding ground for scape goating.
Plus it’s the exact same playbook as the US when it comes to “iMmIgRaNtS!!!”. Logic and reason has long left and there’s really no way to reel in conspiracy nuts once they’ve gone off the rails. Germany is only a few years behind the US.
How would you even prevent this? The ideas spread by messenger and social media and infect people without critical thinking skills - which is most. Chat control is obviously the wrong approach, but what is the right one? How do you convince clanma who doesn’t trust anything anymore that the WhatsApp stats are made up and government statistics are actually trustworthy and backed by data?
With that also comes that a lot of Work With the youth and possibilities have been reduced over time and have been replaced by offers of the extremist right.
Historically Neo-Nazis have been downplayed as “confused people” by the GDR government. When the wall fell, they have been easy “Targets” for the extremist right in western Germany.
Also the east has been a sellout to the “Capitalist west”. There is a Lack of Hope, future and possibilities. Young people left for a furure in the Western part of Germany for reasons.
Overall people are disappointed and populism is strong in that situations. We do have a structual Problem and our government is absolutely out of touch With the majority in the country.
but what is the right one?
direct democracy, where people can protest on specific, relevant initiatives rather than in elections
Switzerland has an average turnout of 35% while Germany’s last big election was almost 90% iirc. Apathy is strong and it’s another threat to democracy.
Throw in mandatory voting and we might get somewhere. Make it no longer be a battle for turnout by emotional manipulation but a battle for votes by actual policy content. Australia made their transition a formal study.
But yes, more involvement of the populace in politics might be a good step.
but what is the right one?
Culture, education and ensuring everyone’s in at least the 2nd lower tier of Marslow’s pyramid.
For starters.
You don’t convince her.
The reich mindset does the same things to a person’s eyes as the abrehamic religions. In either situation, the person has surrendered themselves to the love of torture and abuse, for a chance at survival in a situation their mind at one point considered beyond absolute terror.
This switch is a long understood weakness in human cognition. I assume it evolved as a last-ditch survival tactic. If you’re suffering unimaginably, but you are given any way out, or you see a way out, your mind unhooks from its normal cognition and excepts the cause of that suffering from every output except “permanent fawn”.
Nothing can break a mind from this state but itself.
Both the abrahamic trifecta, and fascists of all types use this technique to turn their figureheads into the target of “permanent fawn”. It is a position above all loved ones including parents and children. It is even above “self” if you can get the person to associate with a “higher self”, like a post-death self or living in-group of people.
Once this has been done, they can do anything they want and their followers will make up their own reasons for following.
You cannot break a person from this. The peak of terror is already occupied in the followers mind. They can imagine nothing worse than betraying the source of their original terror, the one they are looped into fawning.
This is a hard-coded part of the human psyche. It cannot be removed, only “patched”. The only solution is to occupy this space in a person’s mind with something beneficial or benign, before anything else.
Whatever you choose for that position will hold complete power over the person. It will have to be something that no single person can stand in for, or usurp. And no matter what, it will involve scaring the shit out of people when they are kids. That’s how religion manages this through eternal torture, and fascism through an abusive parent.
It doesn’t have to be a needless scare. For example, after this current apocalypse you can just simply tell kids about the hundreds of millions of dead, and a destroyed planet, show them pictures and videos of the robots turning the air in a city into a mist. It’ll be something they need to know about anyway, and avoid at all costs. The scar will have a noble purpose.
Now, what to bind that terror in service to? Something that will finally put a stop to the insanity that has plagued us since the cities began? That’s what we should be focusing on.
People want to have a good life, no matter their critical thinking levels. If your government tries to fuck you and practically only works for lobbyists they will happily jump on any bandwagon praising to be the holy god.
I worry becuase so many places seem only a few years behind the us and that these right wing things have both been internal and abroad so there is so much cross pollination. I have had a hard time believing people could be so illogical actually. Maybe it was my social circle but its not like everyone in my friends circle was especially smart. I think though that I held the position of the smart guy and people tended to go with me. It was only in school that I had strong debate experiences. More so with my college friends where I was not the only smart guy. Thing is I remember seeing graffiti in college bathrooms. Yeah it was in the high school ones but it was like. This is college. But you know its not like everyone is a stem major. After college I worked at a contract engineering firm. Pretty much everyone was engineers. Once again grafitti. I mean im not talking some profound grafitti. Im talking penises and such. Then there was the phd guy working at a national lab who was like running a neo nazi group. ugh. so even people who learned math and logic in a field can’t seem to apply it outside of their field. its nuts.
You know, a right winger was poised to be the next prime minister of Canada. And then Canada saw the shit show in the U.S and pivoted. But it was damn close to following suit.
Why would STEM students be less likely to engage in bathroom graffiti than anyone else?
because its illogical. You are not properly taking care of a public good and creating cost that will lower your quality of life.
That’s not how anyone works. It’s not even a negative, that’s an emotional judgement. Graffiti has a place and it’s not inherently bad.
note I did mention the type of graffitti. penises and such.
The only place to fight it is off the internet.
But it is much harder. You have to go out and socialize, in person.
Plus most people don’t want to talk politics. At least in the U.S, it is considered a somewhat rude or inappropriate conversation topic in casual conversations.
Like religion.
Some people still do it and sometimes it just comes up. But generally it’s seen as pushy. Or trying to start an argument.
But talking politics to friends and family is usually considered fine. Depends on the family members. So I do keep up these conversations with friends and some family members, when I can. Remind them that you can only trust what you hear from real people.
The internet would have you believe the majority of Americans are maga. When it’s actually only 30%.
People in the USA discuss politics and religion all the time, even asking where you go to church and who got and will get your vote.
When I say Casual small talk conversations I mean with non-friend co workers. Cashier’s, barista. Someone in an elevator with you, Etc.
It’s definitely considered rude to bring up religion or politics with random people in casual small talk conversations.
Typically the weather is a go-to topic for such situations if small talk is needed.
I agree that it’s rude, but it didn’t stop a family member’s neighbor from asking a minute into having first met them on the street before I could ring my relative’s doorbell. 🤷♀️
More like 22%, minor correction. Only about 22% of eligible voters voted for Trump. That’s actually less than 20% of the people who live in the USA when you count all the people who can’t vote for one reason or another.
There are 10 maga comments for every 1 normal person on Facebook. Which means they have to be bots and sock puppets.
I try to remind people of this.
The people who say the worst shit like “renee deserve to get shot cause she didn’t listen”. I really don’t think there are very many people like that.
They exist. But they are small in numbers. Yet you constantly see huge numbers of comments along those lines any time someone is harmed or killed by ice.
No, that can just mean everyone else left Facebook. Any group of self selecting people can be non representative of the average.
Plus most people don’t want to talk politics. At least in the U.S, it is considered a somewhat rude or inappropriate conversation topic in casual conversations.
Germans are thankfully more open about discussing politics in my experience. But it’s difficult because people get tiktok brain worms and their logical side goes out the window. Back in the US, we still haven’t figured out the solution to this.
The internet would have you believe the majority of Americans are maga. When it’s actually only 30%.
Depends where you live tbh.
What’s the media landscape like in Germany?
You have state media which is mostly balanced, possibly a little left, and then private conglomerates that love discord, so mostly right leaning and inflammatory. Anything Springer Verlag is garbage, for example. Not as bad as the US with Fox.
Please, stop protecting them and repeating this nonsense. The West German mark and the East German mark were converted at a 1:1 rate right after the Wende. People in the GDR were not all living in Plattenbauten. Many had their own houses, and many others left for southern Germany and Switzerland instead of staying and helping to rebuild the country.
Since then, billions of euros have been transferred from West Germany to East Germany. I remember very well people in the East having two cars and renovating their houses. I had far relatives there, so I saw it myself. Meanwhile, parts of the West, especially the Ruhr area, were struggling heavily, with municipalities accumulating huge debts that they are still dealing with today.
And now they want to tell the West, which has spent decades financing and rebuilding this part of the country, what it should do?
You know what? It might have been better for West Germany if reunification had never happened and East Germany had simply been sold to Russia - at least it seems that’s also their wish.
That’s the exact mindset that got us here. Dismissing and invalidating their feelings. The West struggling doesn’t invalidate their struggle. Russia completely gutted anything industrial, literally taking apart all machinery and moving it to Russia. There was nothing to build on and companies didn’t move there, either. So despite the common struggle, the East wasn’t really able to build any lasting base industry-wise.
disagree with you. I’ve seen and met enough East Germans to have a very different perspective. From my experience, there is often very little empathy - especially towards people of different skin colours or sexual orientations. There is a reason why parts of eastern Germany are sometimes referred to as Dunkeldeutschland.
Did they ever thank West Germans for the help? NEVER. If anything, it’s been the opposite: demanding more and more. And again, telling West Germans what they have to do. You don’t bite the hand that feeds you, something many East Germans seem not to understand.
If you feel so strongly about it, I suggest you pay back the Solidaritätsbeitrag, which has amounted to billions over the years.
Ah yes the helping hand from the west. Buying company inventories and closing them afterwards. Mass unemployment. Integration without the ability to influence the legal foundations of their new state. Those ungrateful east germans who could not build their own industry! And all that comes from the ones that build generational wealth from billions of nazi money. Adidas, VW, Bayer, Allianz, Krupp.
Me, too, most recently a coworker from Gera.
I believe the money is part of the issue, and you expecting thanks is telling. Also, “the hand that feeds you” is the exact “lesser human” rhetoric I meant.
If the populace never felt the effect of the money, it might as well never have existed. The West is angry for sending it and the East is angry for not receiving it. Whoever pockets it gladly stands by and watches the East and West fight each other.
I don’t think the Soli is the right tool for the job. The money is just part of the regular budget and not bound to East Germany. Build universities or invest in faculties, infrastructure, etc. and make the region worth investing in from an economic standpoint and the rest will follow, none of which we’re doing.
Fuck, people are dumb all over the globe.
And that’s one of the greatest proofs that people across different cultures are more alike than different.
I’ve met lots of people from different countries and the story is always the same. Low wages, jobs hard to find, housing inaccessible, politicians corrupt. Then the response is always to find a scapegoat. That’s the root of fascism, authoritarianism, whatever you want to call it.
That’s kinda sweet in a disappointing way.
They’re also manipulated on a global scale.
You can thank social media networks and private for profit media conglomerates for this.
Xenophobia is at an all-time high.
Turns out Idiocracy was a documentary.
Always have been and always will be. Humans are not as smart as people like to think they are. Humans have a shitton of PR teams to sell you that people are smarter than they actually are.
… the AfD, whose Saxony-Anhalt branch is categorised as “right-wing extremist” by Germany’s domestic intelligence agency.
More useless labels I see. Doesn’t seem to mean anything if they are still allowed to be a legit political party who can take power.
Fun fact: this useless label is there so the afd can be forbidden, since “right-wing extremist” also means anti-constitution, but our goverment is too busy filling the pockets of their lobby friends.
It’s almost like capitalism is incompatible with democracy.
Incompatible if unchecked and it definitely shouldn’t be running it, it shouldn’t be the singular pillar, it shouldn’t be a way to gauge who is more free than others. It should be a part of an economic system if anything, not the entire point of one. Unfortunately we have a bunch of mentally ill members of our species who hold it up as some magical end all be all, even despite warnings from various ancient cultures about how bad that turns out when you do that.
Exactly, it’s supposed to mean something… In theory…
I’ve come to realize most of our justice system is toothless. ICJ? Useless. EU? Lol. Verfassungsschutz? Nope. The police will enforce copyright law for movies because of corporate interests, but anything larger than isolated cases is too big to address. Law and order are mass hallucinations in the western world, easily exploited by anyone ruthless enough to try. And it feels like we’ve reached a point of saturation where the ruthless are no longer satisfied with what they were previously able to achieve within the confines of this hallucination, so they’re just tearing it down.
What can we do about it? The overlap with anarchism is large: use cash, don’t buy from Amazon (or similar), use Linux, don’t pay for subscriptions. Don’t use AI. They want your money; don’t give it to them. Sadly, 90% of the population have no impulse control, or I’m asking them to abstain from the only pleasure they have left in their lives - everything else has already been torn down.
I’m gonna go be depressed by myself for a while.
If anything, the label probably galvanizes supporters
So the Nazis will return to Germany?
They never left.
They never left (West) Germany.
AfD is bigger in east Germany.
Yep, with the dissolution of the GDR came a thorough eradication of all organized socialists in the East, who were purged and punished by the western half. This created a vacuum easily filled by the far-right.
Ah… I see you are from .ml…
First, currently whole Europe is shifting right, so its not only the dissolution of the GDR at play here. However, that the former GDR is a bit farther along can be explained partly by the older generation in the GDR having been socialized in an authoritarian regime, a neo-liberal shift in the last decade(s) afterwards and missing strong civil society, where they felt left behind which affected the youth. And the right was there to gain traction over all these years.
I don’t agree to your framing as ‘all organized socialists’ getting ‘purged and punished’, because many individuals are still alive and well today. The PDS, now ‘Die Linke’ had or has a couple of them in their ranks. Many mistakes where done in the dissolution, but it has been a generally positive change for the people in east Germany.
BSW, the ‘other left’, and Putin sympathizer party, founded by an ex-SED politician, is actually closer to the far-right AfD in term of foreign policy, immigration and other topics, then other parties, supporting my point that the common thread is actually authoritarianism then actual social values.
I see that you are from lemmy.world, and I see that we are both using Lemmy. I don’t really see what that has to do with anything.
As for the whole of Europe surging to the right, I am well aware. The global south is managing to develop through increased south-south trade, which is weakening European abilities to benefit from unequal exchange and imperialism. There’s a ton of intricacies I just glossed over, but what we are seeing isn’t anything new: when capitalist economies suffer crisises in profitability, they surge to the right as smaller capitalists feel squeezed out and larger capitalists take advantage of this.
My point on the former GDR regions being especially vulnerable to this rightward shift is just that, the trend is broad but is especially pronounced in the GDR due to the crushing of the socialists during the reintegration of eastern Germany into the west.
One thing I strongly disagree with is your analysis of what authority actually is. By all means, Germany today is an “authoritarian regime.” States exist to uphold the ruling class of society and to prevent other classes from gaining political power. The extent to which authority is applied depends on the conditions a society is in. Modern Germany is a dictatorship of capital, and is an imperialist state. The former GDR was a socialist state, where the working classes ran society. Both are “authoritarian,” in that both exerted controls on those who undermined the state, but both serve enormously different groups of people.
As far as modern socialist parties in Germany are concerned, the KPD and DKP seem to be more representative of socialist views.
You shifted the definition of ‘authoritarian’. I mean Germany today is a democracy, which is not a single-party state as the GDR de facto was, as the other bloc parties were subordinate to the SED via the National Front. They spied on their own people and suppressed dissenting thought. People that tried to flee were shot under standing order. It clearly was an authoritarian regime. Under your definition, any system with a ruling class, would be authoritarian, and that would also include the GDR.
The GDR was run by SED, which later formed into the PDS, with many of the same people, even before the unification. That party got votes and was and still is in form of ‘Die Linke’ an important political party. They weren’t ‘eradicated’… What happened in the unification to GDR that was bad was the de-industrialization. People were left behind, and the far-right stepped in. Now, I would say that the unification was still good for the people of the former GDR, because they gained more freedom, but that is subjective, of course.
In the early years the workers in the GDR were coerced by USSR to mine uranium for them. They were subservient to the USSR, not just run by the workers.
KPD and DKP are electorally negligible, so they aren’t representative of Germany’s left.
Germany today is not a democracy, it’s a dictatorship of capital. The working classes have no power in Germany. Being single-party is not the same as not being democratic. Democracy is rule by the majority, which you conflate with pluralism, which is simply an aspect of western democratic forms, not an actual requirement for rule by the majority.
As for the GDR being authoritarian, sure, only the ruling class was the working class. Many people did lose out with the implementation of socialism, especially because the GDR actually did de-Nazify. People in the former GDR gained the freedom to be impoverished, to see the safety net broken down, to return to being exploited by capitalists and to return to exploiting the global south through imperialism. Sure, they could buy western trinkets again, and business owners benefitted, but I can’t really see that as a valuable “freedom.”
As for the USSR coercing the GDR, the Soviets were devastated by Nazi Germany’s genocidal invasion. They forced reparations on Germany, which they did have a right to.
As for the KPD and DKP being negligent, that doesn’t mean they aren’t representative of Germany’s left. The problem is that Germany, like the rest of the west, is overwhelmingly right-wing, with variances between flavors of right-wing.
West German Nazis are mostly closeted in CDU and FDP, cosplaying democrats.
And not just a little, like more than double.
it’s almost like regions that experienced decades of decline, malnourishment, and poor education are prime breeding grounds for nationalism.
Germany: Hey America, hold my beer.
Seriously UK and Germany, you guys trying to upstage us or something?
Israel is working overtime to keep all 3 allies supporting Israel, even if it means destroying those same allies.
Israel on the US payroll.
Seeing the polarization of the US left vs Democrats, it appears that Israel has captured the DNC. The US has a lot of influence over Israel which is probably why Israel took over that part of the US.
I don’t follow.
Immigration is a problem whether people want to admit it or not. It completely disrupts a country’s economic balance and social contract. Immigrants absorb housing, jobs and other resources like education and healthcare that they have not paid into for their entire lifetimes like the natives have. These items just so happen to be the things in perpetual shortage around the world. We need to drastically rethink how immigrants are integrated into societies. We also need to understand that things like AfD, Trump and other undesirables are a natural consequence of extreme policy choices created by increasingly non-moderate political climates.
You ever wonder why immigrants, a statistically small group of individuals, are blamed for a disproportionately outsized number of problems in a country?
No, of course you haven’t.
FYI in case you haven’t been paying attention to far-right politics for the last two decades, but the people who run on an anti-immigration platform and get elected as a result have no incentive to fix the problem. That’s why immigration has been a revolving door problem here in the United States for as long as I can remember, and “migrant caravans” always show up mid-October of every election year. The far right loves that shit, why would they ever want to get rid of it?
Immigration is actually better for the economy in general.
So banning rainbow flags and becoming allies with Russia is going to fix immigration somehow?
AfD’s success is obviously the result of a foreign influence successfully fooling the gullible.
Sure you need to have a balanced approach to immigration to ensure there’s enough housing an social services. But most anti-immigration shit is centered around racism and appeals to losers that feel like they should be automatically entitled to stuff because of their race.
Anti immigration politicians straight up lie, and when called out on their lies lie some more.
What a load of shit. You are buying into exactly what they are selling.
It this a case where the economically repressed are being used to breed an ugly us vs them situation, to pit them against immigrants using their own national xenophobia, tribalism and false nostalgia? The way to fight this is to feed the wealth back to the people. Tax (or eat) the rich, and education. Also listen to their valid concerns. Just making their ‘right wing’ group illegal will only further resentment. I doubt the people are really right wing in the economic sense at all. The bigotry can be much more easily addressed one people feel safe and secure.
The solution you bring up are impossible to achieve as long as the same oligachrs that breed the right wing are allowed to control the narrative via social media. Education, healthcare, civil rights? Communist! The US is the leading example that people are ready to actively fighting the solutions knstead of the problems, as long as unhinged propaganda is deemed as valid opinion.
So eat the rich it is!
The German state apparatus was too busy harassing legitimate pro-palestian protest to do anything about the actual threat to its constitutional order.
Oh, good burn.
