firstly please understand the difference between a proposed bill and something that is actually gaining traction. as you become more involved you find out that the knee-jerk bills are to just to catch votes in the next cycle; which is dumb af bc the loud voices will have moved on by then.

“Manufacturer Mandates: Proposed laws would require 3D printer manufacturers to include Digital Rights Management (DRM) or “firearms blueprint detection algorithms” in their firmware to automatically block the printing of illegal gun parts.”

yeah they can’t do that, interstate law, international law, etc. what they CAN do is just ban the sale and shipment of 3d printers to the state of washington. good luck with that.

Interstate and international law are irrelevant. The reality is that it’s a way for legislators to do an end-run past the democratic process by leveraging the realities of doing business. They can pass it, and suddenly it makes sense to put those restrictions on all the printers going to the US, because setting up a WA only export division with a separate production process costs money.

This is how California has effectively created national emissions standards in new cars for the last 30 years. It’s why you sometimes see Europeans on the internet asking “what the fuck is this prop 65 warning telling me that everything I own is poisonous?”
